Takahiro Koga
Counter to modern society
A ``cheek armor cup'' that completely covers the cheeks and chin.
Large and small studs cover the entire bowl.
These flashy and unique series,Takahiro KogaIt determines the impression of his work. At first glance, these works appear to be created based on sensibility. However, in reality, the works are created based on historical and cultural backgrounds and respect for the classics.
It is said that Sen no Rikyu, a great master of wabi tea, whom Koga respects, used a black tea bowl to eliminate its presence and bring out the tea. Impressed by this, Koga decided to call it ``anti-wabi-sabi'' in order to make his work stand out. How can we visualize the power inherent in objects and express them as something that gives off an overwhelming presence?
One of Koga's answers was studs.
"I thought it was an interesting shape as the smallest unit of force. It's a shape that also affects sight, touch, and taste."
The keyword ``projection'' later evolved into ``prominent person.''
A person who breaks with old customs. A person who overturns the common sense of the world. A powerful and outstanding presence that can change the world is crystallized by making it into porcelain, which can be called a white jewel. And ``outstanding people'' appear one after another.
Koga says, ``Today's era is like an era of subjugation.''
With the development of social networking sites and the ability for everyone to have a voice, we have entered an era in which people can aim higher than their origins or the area in which they were born and raised, as long as they have the will and courage to speak out. Within this worldview, Cheekyori Cup is a work that uses the unusual helmets of Sengoku warlords as a motif to express the way of life and spirit of people. It is also a shout out to today's high-minded military commanders.
“I am particular about communicating from the local area and expressing myself at a level that is possible for individuals.”
Although there are calls for the diversification of values today, is the ability of local regions to transmit their culture weakening? As mass production progresses and information continues to spread, isn't society becoming more uniform?
That is why Koga continues to create works in Kyushu today. While putting his thoughts into each and every piece of work, he continues to send out a counter to society.
