Tomoya Sakai
Ceramics where consciousness and unconsciousness go back and forth
is a potterTomoya Sakaicreates works in order to recover precious memories that have been buried unknowingly. Therefore, the works emit a mysterious power that appeals to the senses and attracts the viewer.
Thanks to the information revolution such as the Internet and SNS, we are continuously bombarded with information every day. After being forced to choose information without stopping, information deemed unnecessary is sucked into a dark drain.
However, along with this, even the memories that would normally form an individual may become mixed up with something else, slip out, or become submerged without one noticing.
Sakai describes creating on the potter's wheel as being like meditation.
It is an act of calmly sorting out the chaotic state of your head that is buzzing with noise and regaining your sense of self.
I subconsciously move my hand towards the potter's wheel.
The abstracted and simplified forms that emerge are multi-layered images of landscapes, anime, movie scenes, etc. that I had unknowingly forgotten and that I must have had some attachment to.
The traces of the body that have been compared through the clay are left behind due to the plasticity of the clay, and each one becomes a part that constructs the work.
Later, when specific images appear in my mind, I consciously reconstruct them and complete the work.
For Sakai, production is both a symbol of what the self has been made of and a means of preserving the self. Presenting the proof of an artist's life or the memories of an era to the world leads to a feeling of being alive in the present.
What kind of impact will the resulting work have on the viewer?
Sakai hopes that his works will somehow evoke a connection with themselves and evoke buried memories for them as well.
