Fumie Sasai
The form of life that raises its cry
Fumie Sasaihas a unique presence in the modern lacquer art world with its free forms that are not bound by traditional images of lacquer.
Until now, Sasai has consistently pursued form and texture.
The works created by her hands are the figures of creatures with a mysterious fantasy. Due to its structural shape of rounded form and edgy lines, beautiful shadows emerge on the surface, giving it a variety of expressions in various scenes. The simple red lacquer with minimal decoration highlights the form of the work and the smooth surface of the lacquer, creating a texture that makes you want to touch it.
The works she creates are diverse forms of life that originate from her curiosity about the world. In particular, Sasai often uses motifs of rounded, youthful life, such as seeds, fruits, and children.
Why does she keep creating motifs like this? This is probably because he is looking at the energy and possibilities inherent in young lives. Just as a small seed eventually grows into a large tree, and just as a baby eventually grows into an adult with dreams, young lives are full of hope for the future. Sasai's perspective of gently watching over their development is reflected in the pure and bright atmosphere that surrounds Sasai's works. Sasai's works seem to show the peaceful and warm world he envisions.
From the hands of Sasai, who looks at the world with the gentle gaze of a mother, new forms of life are being born into this world again today. They are then wrapped in lacquer, a material with a plump and smooth texture, leaving their appearance semi-permanently.
