DESCRIPTION

In the "ghost" series, the process of inducing "cracking" sometimes causes a piece to collapse under its own weight. Until 2020, such pieces were treated as damaged and discarded. But with "ghost comet", prompted by a certain thought, pieces that collapsed or separated are instead colored only on the separated parts and refired to rejoin them. (Collapse or separation occurring after firing is still treated as damage.)
That thought traces back to the establishment of her own roots and identity. Having spent her childhood in Thailand, unable to speak any Japanese, she came to Japan at age 8. Her father, with whom she lived, spoke only Japanese, so life both inside and outside the home began as a literal, feeling-in-the-dark process of gesture. Furthermore, carrying a name strongly associated in Japan with women, that sense of "alienation" became part of her self-formation during adolescence — being different from those around her became her own identity.
By connecting to society as an artist, I maintain a balance with carrying, as an ordinary citizen who is nobody in particular, only this name (= a sense of alienation).
