DESCRIPTION

As its name suggests, Hoyoroi-hai (Cheek-Armor Cup) mimics armor that fully covers the chin and cheeks — a unique sake vessel that makes the drinker appear to be donning armor as they sip.
The motif is the "kawari-kabuto" — a piece of armor said to have been worn by Sengoku-period warlords, distinguished by its bold, individualistic design.
Koga was moved by the way these warriors staked their lives on the battlefield while also competing in a beauty distinctly their own — and this became the impetus for the work.
Koga calls the present age — where the rise of social media has given everyone the potential for a voice — an age of gekokujo (the low overthrowing the high).
"With the will and resolve to open up a new era, one can rise to the top regardless of one's origins."
Through creating the Hoyoroi Cup series, Koga continues to send encouragement to today's ambitious "warlords."
