DESCRIPTION

This is a technique called 'natural bamboo hōbi ara-ami (rough phoenix-tail weaving).'

The handle of the flower basket is called "tennenchiku" (natural bamboo) — it is the root of the bamboo, and also its source.
Bamboo roots, pushing ever onward through obstacles underground, are a symbol of life.

The body section is woven from “hobichiku” (phoenix-tail bamboo).
The technique of combining "houbichiku" (phoenix-tail bamboo) and "tennenchiku" (natural bamboo), favored by successive generations of Chikuunsai, is the family's signature technique.
It is also a technique passed down exclusively from one generation of the Chikuunsai head to the next, a secret transmitted to a single heir.
