Gathering of Immortals, Soga Shōhaku Maki-e Incense Burner

Shōhaku possessed extraordinary technical skill yet painted wildly unconventional pictures — a challenge, I feel, to the values of the art establishment and society of his time.
My attempt to render Shohaku in maki-e is both an effort to create new values in lacquer art and an exercise in wit and humor.
