DESCRIPTION

A style called "beni-kase" (crimson deer-back), using iron-rich clay. After throwing the form on the wheel, fine spatula marks are applied to the exterior, with additional spatula work at the rim to add subtle variation.
A contrast is created between the soft, wheel-thrown expression of the interior and the strong impression of hera (spatula) marks on the exterior. By adding a small amount of Okura sabi-tsuchi clay to Uji clay, the piece also reproduces the ancient Asahi-yaki atmosphere, with black speckles known as goma-tsuchi (sesame clay) appearing here and there.
