Bone Flower

This work, from the "Bone Flower" series, emerges where the once-distant "boundary" between architecture and ceramics has dissolved. Architectural design methods using cutting-edge technology, such as 3D CAD and programming, are combined with the traditional techniques of Ohi ware.
Bone-like ceramic fragments come together like a vivid flower, radiating a primal vitality reminiscent of Jōmon-era flame pottery.
Unlike Western architecture, in traditional Japanese architecture the "boundary" between inside and outside is ambiguous — the earthen-floor entryway, the veranda, the open paper shoji screens, and the wind and light that pass through them. This lightness embraces that ambiguous boundary, denying the solemnity of conventional ceramics and pointing to the beginnings of a truly "Japanese" ceramic art.
