Eightfold Blessing, Bounce

A work inspired by the word "kotohogu" — to pray for happiness by offering words of celebration.
Bamboo has long been regarded in Japan as a sacred plant that wards off evil, and has been used in various Shinto rites.
Using bamboo, the maker formed the auspicious number "8", said to spread outward like good fortune, and linked them together in a prayer for connected happiness. "Yaiwau" is the artist's own coined term. The subtitle "bounce" was named for a form reminiscent of a ball bouncing off the ground. The main material is madake bamboo from Oita Prefecture, finished with dyeing and lacquer to bring out the bamboo's supple character.
