In Japan, masks have been made since the Jomon period, thousands of years ago. Masks are said to have originated in ritual use, from the idea that by taking on the form of a mask, a person could embody a subject and channel prayers or powers beyond human reach.
Among them, masks modeled on foxes appear again and again, in anime and elsewhere. In Japan, the fox has long been regarded as a deity presiding over the bounty of the five grains, so perhaps the mask was given the role of an icon that, by borrowing the fox's power, mediated prayers to nature.
This work aims to express, in a new form, the mask as a facet of Japanese culture that has been passed down for thousands of years. Rather than simply depicting a fox, it is adorned with studs to amplify the power inherent in the mask itself, visualizing that power and the prayers it embodies.
Koga sees the present as an age of gekokujō, where the low overturns the high. He believes that even in an uncertain age, anyone with the will and resolve to forge their own path forward can rise, regardless of origin. He imbues the mask with the role of a device through which a hidden inner power can burst out to the surface.
