That Which Remains - Vessel of Conflict and Coexistence

Throughout history, glass work has occupied a position between craft and art.
I create while thinking every day about what new value can be found by using glass to express things in different ways.

I believe craft is something that requires functionality, while art needs no functionality and can express the invisible — the spiritual, the conceptual.
Focusing on the vessel within that, when considering craft and art, I think of a vessel as something that "holds" (todomeru).
As a piece of craft, a vessel's functionality suited to its purpose is important — it exists to hold visible things such as water or objects
When one considers the vessel as art, on the other hand, it can be thought of as something able to hold not only water or objects, but invisible things — time, space, and concepts.
Glass in particular retains its form by cooling from a high-temperature, molten state during creation, making it a material well suited to expressing the vessel as art.

This work is composed of two elements: the hard, confining image of a vessel's form, so often shaped in craft, and the unforced, free, soft form unique to blown glass that overflows from it.
This expresses the clash and harmony of opposing forces — energy overflowing from within against the energy that binds it, soft form against hard form, freedom against restraint.
